Today, manufacturers move their goods all over the world. These goods have different origins, destinations and modes of transport. Consider bananas moving by ocean freight from Brazil to the US; Smartphones from China to Europe on an airplane; And minerals moving on a series of trucks and trains across the US. Transportation & Logistics is the business of moving these goods from one point to another point. And it’s a complex industry. At the center, are a set of companies who manage movement on behalf of others. These companies are called Third Party Logistics Providers, or 3PLs.
This primer takes the perspective of the 3PL and unpacks the movement of goods. We will cover the products offered by 3PLs, typical product journeys, ecosystem participants, economics, metrics and trends shaping the industry today.
